Local News for January

Calgary is a very connected city and we receive a lot of information from the City and from various community-minded organizations. We thought it would be a good idea to post this information on our blog so locals can see what’s going on, participate in various surveys and have one place to get all their community information. We will create a new story each month and update them as we receive more info – look forward to any feedback or comments:

2016 Avenue Best Neighbourhoods Survey Now Open!

URGENT: More Volunteers Needed for Fundraising Casino, 28 & 29 February, 2016

We are still urgently looking for volunteers to help out at our Fundraising Casino in February. We get to do one of these events every 18 months and the money it raises helps support the Hall and lets us hold community events.

If you can help, check out the roles here and sign up online.

Make 2016 the Year YOU Volunteer

We are so lucky to have the volunteers we do in this community, BUT with so few of us, it's hard to put on great events and make our neighbourhood even better. If you donated just a few hours of your time, it's amazing what we could all do together.

If you have a special skill - like painting, building, photography, writing, design or event management - we would love to hear from you! Even if you're not sure how you can be involved - get in touch: we always need more hands on deck at events!

If you think you can help, please email comms@killarneyglengarry.com for more information

Keep Your Community Safe

Recently, we have had some concerns sent to us about graffiti, abandoned cars and other community issues. If you have seen anything like this, we recommend you contact the City of Calgary via their 311 service first. If you don't see any action, do feel free to email us and we can pass your concerns on to our local police contact.

A Seat At Our Table

Some of you may know that the KGCA has been the fortunate recipient of grant money from ATB Agriculture for our community garden in both 2014 and 2015. We have also worked with them in our collaborations with Village Brewery in supplying hops and fruit for the 2014 and 2015 community involved ale (or Village Gardener beer). Well, the team at ATB - who are avid supporters of Alberta agriculture - have been busy supporting other great causes as well.

They helped bring together a team of dedicated chefs and servers at the latest 'A Seat At Our Table' event, feeding over 360 guests of the Mustard Seed Community in Calgary. This was part of a series of food-related events designed to inspire conversation about community, our relationship with the land and our food, quality of life and also to create life-long friendships

To commemorate the event, they made a fantastic video. it's only 3 1/2 mins and we highly recommend you take a look here.

By the numbers:

  • 560 guests
  • 25 chefs
  • 25 farmers
  • a dozen brewers and bootleggers

Well done ATB - here's to more collaboration in future.
