MIRACLE ON 34th STREET BLOCK PARTY
The 9th Annual “Miracle on 34th Street” Block Party is happening on Saturday, September 9th, 2017 from 3 - 10pm at the intersection of 34th Street and 30th Avenue SW in Killarney. Admission is $10 for those 13 & over. Kids under 13 years are FREE. Everyone is welcome. We ask that people RSVP to our gmail listed below so that we have an idea of numbers for planning the amount of food to purchase.
Born out of a desire to cultivate community, a small but powerful group of neighbours and friends made the leap from front porch theorizing to the reality of the first “Miracle” in 2009. “Miracle on 34th Street” is a family-friendly event with tons of activities for neighbours of all ages. In the works for this year:
Bouncy Castle from 3 - 7pm Face Painter from 3 - 6pm Sidewalk Chalk & Bubbles Bike Decorating & Bike Parade
Police Cruiser and Fire Truck visits Street Hockey Games
Air Hockey Table Live Music
BBQ Pulled Pork or Beef Brisket on a Bun, Spolumbo’s Chicken Sausages and kids’ hot dogs all available for purchase (including condiments)
Community Potluck Table for Snacks, Starters, Sides, Salads & Sweets Juice Boxes for the kiddies
Evening bonfire (Street safe fire table)
We recommend you bring the following:
Coolers, non-glass beverage containers, lawn chairs, firewood for the bonfire, a keen sense of fun and boatloads of community spirit!
In the spirit of our new green bin recycling program, we are very excited that we’ll be able to compost all of our waste including paper plates, napkins, wooden cutlery and all food waste. Ultimately, we are striving for a zero-waste event someday. To that end, please consider adopting the first “R” in the “Reduce, Reuse & Recycle” philosophy. By bringing your own reusable plates, cups, cutlery and napkins from home, there is no waste produced in the first place.
Further in the spirit of making our event as green as possible, we would love to have “Waste Not, Want Not” Ambassadors on site to help people to put their waste in the right bin (green, blue, black or bottle & can recycling). This would be a great job for kids in the “tween” age range. Dinner would be provided. Shifts would be 1 - 2 hours long.
Organization & Jobs
We are a small volunteer group of neighbours and friends and we have many of the foundation organizational jobs down to a science. In mid-July, we send out a “Save the Date” notice to our email distribution list. In early August, we send out a digital 2-sided flyer with all the details laid out. We also create a poster and post them up in the area and we print the flyer and deliver them to households in the area.
We book the bouncy castle, the face painter and put in a request for the visits from the Fire Department (with a truck!!) and from the Police Cruiser.
We gather supplies for bike decorating, sidewalk chalk, bubbles & glow sticks and we gather the air hockey game and nets and sticks for street hockey.
The City of Calgary has an online application process for the permit for the block party. Signatures are collected (giving permission) and all the information is submitted online along with payment. The permit is issued by email and we print it and display it on the street barricades. We order and pick up the street barricades from the city’s Streets Division.
We order and pick up the BBQ Pulled Pork & Beef Brisket, the Spolumbo’s Chicken Sausages and buns for the BBQ meats. We buy hot dogs, sausage & hot dog buns, condiments, paper plates, napkins, wooden cutlery & juice boxes.
There is a volunteer potluck table and in the past, it’s been filled with snacks, starters, sides, salads & sweets.
On the day of the party, we gather tables, chairs, lights, BBQs, waste & recycling receptacles, a cash box and float, food tickets & a list of past attendees. There is an admission table where you come to pay the entry fee, grab a name tag and introduce yourself to us!
The “Miracle on 34th Street” Block Party is a really fun, family-friendly community building event. Come and join us on Saturday, September 9th!
